Chattanooga Green Lodging Wins Governor's Award
March 26, 2010: Chattanooga Green Lodging Certification Program is announced as a winner the Tennessee Governor's Environmental Stewardship Award The Awards program recognizes exceptional voluntary actions that improve or protect our environment and natural resources with projects or initiatives not required by law or regulation.

Chattanooga Green Lodging Program is an initiative to promote and support Chattanooga's vision for a sustainable city. Our Green Lodging Program encourages hotels, bed and breakfasts, other lodging facilities and restaurants to be aware of their impact on the environment and to take steps to reduce their carbon footprint while enhancing the overall sustainability of their operations. The program provides guidance and resources that will greatly reduce our impact by using techniques that have been proven to reduce waste and in many circumstances save money.

Certification to the program is provided by Skye Con, an environmental consulting firm specializing in hospitality and tourism. Certification is awarded after an on-site visit to participating hotels to ensure all minimum standards are in place. Once certified, properties are encouraged to take an active role, including working with the city's Chattanooga Green effort to increase awareness in businesses and the community, reducing waste from operations, promoting natural resource conservation and promoting efficiency measures and alternative energy deployment. The Chattanooga Green Lodging Program was featured in the Chattanooga Climate Action Plan's Business Participation Section (Objective O, Page 67).

The Core Activities and minimum standards for certification are:

  • Optional Linen Service: sheets and towels are not automatically changed every day.
  • Recycling: guests must have the opportunity to recycle during their stay.
  • Water Conservation: a plan should be in place for minimizing water use.
  • Energy Conservation: a plan should be in place to address energy conservation & efficiency opportunities.
  • Offer a Green Events Package: facilities should be able to accommodate groups who want "green" events.
  • Have a Written Plan for Continued Environmental Improvement. The facility must have a plan, in writing, outlining steps for continued improvements in sustainability.

Guests visiting Chattanooga's Green Lodging facilities can expect that the facility has at least these activities in place. The Greater Chattanooga's Hospitality Association members are encouraged to tell us about any and all of the other "green" activities they've undertaken - and these will appear on our website. Consumers can then choose to stay at a facility which offers the "green" amenities that they value!
