"More than two years ago, on behalf of Chattanooga, I signed the U.S. Conference of Mayors Climate Protection Agreement. I'm proud to say that Chattanooga was one of the early cities committed to the cause of reducing greenhouse gases - there are now more than 800 cities nationwide. I have appointed the Chattanooga Green Committee to advise and assist us in moving Chattanooga further toward the long-sought goal of sustainability and they have worked diligently towards this goal. It is important that we, as a community, determine the path we take as we continue to address environmental issues in Chattanooga." Mayor Ron Littlefield - 2009

Seventy-Five percent of the tour operators in a recent survey said they have or are planning to produce a responsible tourism policy[a] . More than two-thirds of US travelers consider active protection of the environment, including support of local communities, to be part of a hotel's responsibility.[b] Chattanooga has a well-deserved reputation as a leader in innovation and forming partnerships among private and public entities. The growing demand for visible environmental responsibility provides an occasion for us to continue this leadership, becoming an even more attractive destination for those tourists and tourism professionals who value a commitment to sustainability. This is not a problem that needs to be solved, but rather an opportunity for us to be at the forefront of a growing interest in sustainability. As interest in protecting the environment has grown, so has a reluctance to accept individual claims about "environmental friendliness" our "sustainability." Indeed, Federal Trade Commission "Guides to Environmental Marketing Claims"[c] indicate that the basis for such claims should be clear and defined. A properly structured certification program can give visitors and potential visitors the assurance that our properties are doing the right things.
